She uses PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) with her campers with special needs. It is a daily calendar of activities. She slots in the mandatory activities and the children get to pick the extras. She loves the schedule but finds that it is the other leaders who often will mess with it and confuse her children! She has given the other leaders a lot of training this year so that they know not to touch her schedule.
Because of PECS, she had had some children come back week after week who in previous years had to be sent home midway through the week. The parents love her!
Thanks for sharing with us at No Ordinary Blog Hop. For a while, I went to the grocery store at 6 am so I could at least get SOMETHING accomplished before the baby had to go down for a nap again at 9. It's amazing how much you can get accomplished when you get an early start to the day. You just put in the name of the book you want and if it is in their system it will give you the lexile number. The conversion chart I listed up above will help you determine where that book sits. I too wish that the books themselves would have the lexile number or a reading level written in them. Thank you for sharing it at NOBH.

I have on many occasions found a book in the children's section of the library, checked it out, and found out while reading it together that it was completely inappropriate for children. It's my opinion books should have a similar rating such as movies do. It would be a lot less frustrating to parents and children.

Have a wonderful day!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15972430229339449257noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3816163336780446662.post-42744061185099384002012-07-19T00:06:31.238-07:002012-07-19T00:06:31.238-07:00I wish I had a routine - it just kind of happened ...I wish I had a routine - it just kind of happened like that this day. My children (3) did not have ODD but did have the odd meltdown so I can understand (a bit).
I like the idea of having a tool kit and I especially like the idea of working with your son's diet. I am a former high school teacher and the daughter in law of chiropractors, naturopaths and homeopaths (both inlaws practicse all 3 disciplines). I believe in the right diet because I've seen what the elimination of trigger foods and sensitivities can do for a child's ability to focus and behave.
May God bless you for the great job you are doing raising your children and thanks for sharing with us at NOBH.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16898243528939762403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3816163336780446662.post-4025263847541040122012-05-08T03:37:42.979-07:002012-05-08T03:37:42.979-07:00lots of good ideas here. I love the balls, the clothes, the reformed rakes. It is totally "twinkie" lit (http://www.deadtreesandsilverscreens.com/)but I love it. I also just started reading "101 Games and Activities for Children with Autism, Asperger's and Sensory Processing Disorders" By Tara Delaney, M.S., OTR. My goal is to write a blog article on how sensory issues can be an obstacle to learning how to read, and discover some activities that will not only help my sensory sensitive child but also increase his literacy skills.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10245106796070254783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3816163336780446662.post-38715234689293187162012-05-02T17:34:09.041-07:002012-05-02T17:34:09.041-07:00What are you reading these days? What are you reading these days?DThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15445550272628303725noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3816163336780446662.post-52632956865975595442012-04-19T11:54:55.590-07:002012-04-19T11:54:55.590-07:00Love the photo of your sleeping boys.
